The Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera has established a reputation for reliability, comfort, and affordability across its various model years. Owners generally appreciate its smooth ride and spacious interiors, making it a popular choice for budget-conscious drivers and first-time car owners. However, many have noted issues with outdated features, sluggish performance, and occasional reliability concerns, particularly with electrical components. Overall, the Cutlass Ciera is seen as a dependable option with solid gas mileage, although it may lack the excitement or modern amenities found in newer vehicles.

I bought this car as a project, not knowing it had sat for 13 years doing nothing. New plugs and a fuel pump and filter and it was on its way. Ive had this car for almost 4 years now and have touched EVERY part of it. Ive done head gaskets, tranny filter and flush, cooling system, timing chain, cv shafts, suspension, all of it. And I will say, the 3.1 is a good motor. This cars tranny slows it down for good gas mileage and it certainly gets that. Its lightweight but if you put some wider tires on it it gets around just fine in the winter. Ive never personally gotten stuck in the montana winters. Its easy to work on for most things but parts are getting super scarce for the body's. However these engines were in everything and share lots with the 3.4 which were in EVERYTHING. My issues I have with the car stem from it sitting for so long. But even then this cars as old as I am and spent half of its life sitting and rotting and its still running as my daily driver. Its a good car but do try to take care of it. It'll return the favor.
This 85 Cutlass was not high reliability nor few troubles, common to 85 GM. No wonder Japanese cars sales took off when we look back at "Big 3" reliability and quality from around 1973 to 1996 ??? The advent of overdrive automatics was the worst time period of all. I recall brand new Dodge minivans of 1989 not even driving themselves off the new car delivery trucks. What a nightmare. Then the first electronic fuel injected cars stunk and all their sensor troubles. Off on a fond memory tangent, my 76 land yacht ginormous Olds 88 Royale with huge 455 V8 and solid old turbo-400 transmission was one of the best cars I've ever owned. It went for 250,ooo miles, never wore out, family just got tired of driving it, never leaked anything, never used oil, always started setting outside down to 30 below zero, it only rusted out and liked gas at about 15 mpg's max, was it. Even the worst worn out, rough freeze thaw road in all of the northland couldn't be felt underneath it's seemingly 20' long wheelbase. What a sled old "Rosie" was !!
This is a 1987 Cutlass Ciera, not 1990. (The cargurus won't add the other years. ie. 1982-1996) I have loved this car from the day I saw it. My grandmother had an 86 Cutlass Ciera, but the motor siezed up and the body was beyond repairable. My parents picked this gem up for $500 with less than 150000km on the odometer. It was laid up 5 months after we bought it because we picked up a differen't car. I wanted the car and my parents gave it to me and I put it on the road in June. I put about 30000km on it in 6 months before the motor blew. I used it to drive me back and forth to University for 3 months and all the highway driving did it's toll on the motor. It's not as easy as one might think to find the 4cyl engine for this car, they've been well picked over and most had the 2.8 in them. The car gets Ok gas mileage, the 3spd transmission isn't much to be desired, mine needs a TCC selonid and pressure switch, this will help with my gas mileage. It rides like a Cadillac, and moves around pretty quick. I miss driving it. The plans for it are to put a 4spd OD transmission in it and a different 4cyl engine. For added fuel economy and better acceleration
When I first saw the car, I fell in love with it. The classic American looks, the ridiculously comfortable interior, the sweet rumble of the V6 engine, I love it all. Even though my car was not well taken care of or maintained, it proves to be a reliable car that still has plenty of life left in it. Parts and maintenance are cheap, except for tires which are getting increasingly hard to get. Since they are cheap to buy and maintain, they are probably the best car you could possibly get when you're on a tight budget. The only real downside is the fuel economy, although this is still surprisingly good for a 3.8 V6.
Got the car from my dad as it was apparent I couldnt use the Trans Am as my winter car. 3.1 V6 160hp/185lbs of torque. 0-60: 9seconds, 1/4mi: 17seconds. Is a great winter car, handles beautifully. In the snow I can kick the rear end out and correct for the turn perfectly. Braking in icy conditions is no problem. 3200lbs car gets off the line quickly with power threw the whole RPM band. Although not the quickest car on the road it can hold its own against the average sedan.
