Jeep Grand Cherokee (1993-1998) for Sale near Sicamous, BC
4.5 Overall rating
(209 reviews)This is a '98 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited I bought after I returned a '97 Laredo when its lease was over. Needless to say, I must like the potential of its chassis and thought a 4.9L V8 engine would be a better match (vs. the 4.2L inline 6 that came in the Laredo). The Limited was the top-of-the-line Grand Cherokee with all-time (viscous coupling) AWD and leather(top grain, creamy smoth)/wood(fake) trim interior. Other improvements included the use of CV joints in the front transaxle and powered/heated memory seats. All these added luxury had transformed the vehicle from a regular SUV to a civilized ride. This was largely due to the creamy smooth power plant (reasonably quiet with plenty of low end torque), and revised spring/damping rates (the suspension now felt softer). Straight line acceleration was sport car fast and there was little body lean when cornering. However, due to its high centre-of-graviy, narrow track, and short wheel base (like most SUVs), abrupt weight transfers had prevented this vehicle from achieving sporty sedan level of handling. Daily driving and highway commutes were well mannered and sporty. Wind noise and road noise was noticeable but not intrusive. All controls felt positive and were easy to engage. The very sophisticated ventilation system was effective but just a touch noisy. Sitting position was as it supposed to be - upright with plenty of leg and head room. This vehicle was designed with exceptional off-road abilities and therefore suffered from having a fairly compact size (to achieve short overhang). There wasn't much "utility" in terms of trunk and passenger space. The full time AWD system did not provide any level of lock-up making driving in snow less than confidence inspiring (unless the low ratio final drive was engaged which will lock the centre differentia, good only for crawling speedl). Fuel efficiency was certainly not there as the fuel guage could be seen literally moving while enroute! The ride was not "luxury" like its premium quality appointment had suggested. As a result, I haven't owned another SUV since, but am at least tempted, only but 10 years later by the more evolved products where superb ride and performance are blended together (think Porsche Cayenne and Mercedes R Class).
Performance - it has performed great right up until we had to replace the engine. But then again I still can't complain because i have no clue how well the previous owners took care of it. Build Quality - so far the only repairs are the brakes, muffler, engine, and drag link Appearance - well the outer appearance is great, but once i took off the front bumper, there was evidence of the vehicle being in an accident. Cost of Ownership - its getting about 18 mpg and we paid $2500 for it Fun Factor - this is fun to drive but my only grip is that it handles too well in the snow lol. with it being all time 4 wheel drive it makes it hard to have fun lmao
A 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 5.2L V8 magnum engine with k&n FIPK intake system 3.5" rough country suspension lift Painted tires, hood, front and rear bumper Racing seat, steering wheel and seat belt covers Sony Xplod radio 11 LED and neon strips inside, 2 in the headlights Nightshaded turn signals and corner lights along with eyelids 31" TBC mud claw tires
Performance: Suprisingly Quick, Brakes are Ok, handling in a bit roly poly but as expected of a 4x4 Build quality: Good Appearence: Good Cost of Ownership: Good 34MPG on Motorway Fun Factor: Quite Fun, quick when you fancied a laugh
This is a very solid car that I would recommend to anyone who asked. Mechanically, one of the best and most reliable anywhere. Good breaks, comfortable ride, and communicative steering add to this to make it a joy to drive. No problems whatsoever over the course of the 23,000 miles I put on it. If there is one drawback to owning this car, it is the poor fuel economy. I got an average of18 mpg, getting as much as 23 and as little as 13. However, I still highly recommend it as a sound, safe investment.
