The Alfa Romeo Stelvio is a blast to drive, but it's let down by its old technology.

It’s not often you see an Alfa Romeo on the road today, but when you do, it’s an experience. The Italian manufacturer pours intricate style into its vehicles, ensuring they look nothing like the egg-shaped blobs that often run around our city streets. If a Lexus RX is a perfectly acceptable Nordstrom house brand, the Stelvio is straight out of Prada.

Named after the sinuous Stelvio Pass in the Alps of Italy, the Stelvio Sprint, Stelvio Ti, Stelvio Veloce and the bonkers Stelvio Quadrifoglio are the trim levels offered. In Canada, all-wheel drive (AWD) is standard, while rear-wheel drive (RWD) is not offered. Across the board, the Stelvio exhibits a masterful chassis and zippy turbocharged engines. However, it is plagued by old technology and it faces stiff competition.

Outstanding list of features. Learning about all of them can be a complicated process. The price we paid feels like a great value. A power outlet in the rear hatch area would be a nice addition. Fun to drive.

This car is fun to drive and is the sexiest SUV out there. I have the “Veloce” model with Vesuvio gray with red leather that screams Italian. It has all the bells and whistles that are available these days. I do miss the “hold” braking feature my Mercedes had for stop signs. The seats in the Alfa are amazingly comfortable. Buy a used one with low mileage as they depreciate a lot in the first couple years. As a long time Alfa owner of several vehicles, I didn’t consider another make.
