2013 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

As they are wont to do, the engineers at Jeep have again produced the most capable and reliable Jeep Wranglers yet with the release of the 2013 Jeep Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited by focusing their attention on interior ergonomics and expanding 4-wheel-drive (4WD) capability. The Wrangler Unlimited in particular extends that rugged Jeep persona into a more traditional SUV. Jeep succeeded in making the 4-door compact SUV more enjoyable and comfortable for everyday driving with improved on-road dynamics, fuel efficiency, and interior comfort, while still improving off-road ability.
Of course, the Wrangler Unlimited still shares many of the Wrangler’s iconic features, such as the round headlamps, seven-slot grille, trapezoidal wheel flares, exposed hinges, fold-down windshield, removable doors, and the removable convertible top. The key difference between the Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited remains wheelbase length and the number of doors. Jeep has a released an Unlimited variant of every ‘13 Wrangler available, from the Sport, Freedom Edition, Sahara, and Rubicon to the limited-edition Rubicon 10th Anniversary and the new Moab special-edition trim.
The special-edition Wrangler Unlimited Moab, named for the historic Jeep off-roading destination in Utah, adds another level of capability to the Wrangler off-roading experience. Based on the Sahara, the Moab comes equipped with 17-inch black Rubicon alloy wheels, a standard Trak-Lok anti-spin rear differential, and a manual transmission with a 3.73 rear axle ratio. Additionally, the Moab has unique exterior features, including a Mopar power dome hood, premium rock rails, and matching premium off-road bumpers.
Every Wrangler Unlimited trim was designed to further Jeep’s seven-plus decades of 4WD off-road engineering. Along with its obligatory body-on-frame design, all Wrangler Unlimited trims offer a front and rear 5-link suspension system, electronic lockers, and a 44.3-degree approach angle to help scale some of the toughest (and most fun) terrain.
For 2013, Jeep’s award-winning 3.6-liter V6 engine powers everything with the Wrangler name on it, providing 285 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. That V6 will also achieve fuel efficiency of 16 mpg city/21 highway/18 combined. The Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited remain some of the select few of midsize SUVs to offer a 6-speed manual transmission, which is available with every trim out there in addition to the 5-speed automatic. And, of course, with seating for five adults, the Wrangler Unlimited is only 4-door 4WD convertible on the market.
The removable top that has made the Wrangler famous now comes with a new easy-lift mechanism that makes it easier to remove the new premium soft top, especially with only one person. These new tops, available on all models, use an easier-to-clean upscale material that helps reduce interior noise. Keep in mind you are not limited to these soft tops--you can configure your Wrangler Unlimited with a variety of options, ranging from your traditional soft top to body-color three-piece hard tops. And as far as wheels go, both Sahara and Rubicon trims receive new wheel designs, with the Sahara featuring an 18-inch 5-hole alloy wheel and the Rubicon getting a more aggressive 17-inch 10-hole alloy look.
Inside, the Wrangler Unlimited’s infotainment center features FCA’s Uconnect system, which includes voice recognition, Bluetooth streaming audio, navigation, and SiriusXM satellite radio. Audio will be piped into the cabin through a new Alpine premium speaker setup available with both standard and navigation-equipped systems. Also, you’ll find a new tire-pressure monitoring system in the gauge cluster that gives direct readouts for each tire.
You’ll find new front and rear seats in the Wrangler Unlimited, re-contoured and with larger bolsters for increased comfort during long drives and more support for all of your off-roading or sporting activities. Additional interior features include the likes of automatic temperature control, heated premium leather seats, a USB connection to the media center, 12-volt accessory outlets and a 115-volt AC outlet for your three-pronged electronics. Also new to the Wrangler Unlimited are larger rear windows designed to boost backward visibility.
Of course, given the off-road orientation of that older rugged body-on-frame design, Jeep does what it can to make the Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited as safe as possible. But with an SUV where you can remove a sizable chunk of the body, there’s only so much you can do as far as safety is concerned. With that said, the Wrangler Unlimited comes equipped with standard electronic stability controls, electronic roll mitigation, trailer-sway control, and brake traction control.
The Wrangler Unlimited undoubtedly offers a very unique blend of capability and fun. Its fans aren’t swayed by the relatively poor fuel efficiency, safety concerns, and general impracticality. The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited is a car to like despite--and in some cases because of--its flaws. It fits a very distinct niche in today's car market, but that niche seems to be a relatively big one given its sales numbers.

by Guru9DKYC7As an ‘older guy’ my memories of the Jeep were of ‘fun, but not solid and not comfortable. The 2013 Wrangler Sahara Unlimited is very solid, comfortable, and has a great ride!
