(10 reviews)I bought this from a friend in '93 & rebuilt the 340ci engine. Drove it daily until the end of '96. Had lots of power, 14s qtr-mile. The 60's era subdued lines made for a nice sleeper, oh yeah, and the back seat folds down and you can sleep in it!!
Has a 340 4- barrel carberatuer and 8 degree timing. The performance is salty, it goes well when the 4 barrel kicks in for acceleration. The car is very fun to drive especially becasue when it shifts the rpm's build up and it peels out while going like 40.. lol
This car wasa restoration, it was stripped completely and painted, and put back together from the best parts of 3 cars. Engine died from oil starvation in first week, eventually found a good engine to replace it, but the flywheel was incorrectly installed causing throbbing vibrations above 65 mph. All this got sorted in the end though. Bad rust under fresh paint had to have the rear floor rebuilt. Basically it was a nightmare. It was kind of ugly too, the fastback was ok but didn't quite match the front somehow. This does work in it's favour, and you get all the fun of a muscle car without the tax of the more known mustangs and chargers.
The 340 engine leaves nothing to ask for. Expensive to own and not very reliable. But with a mean look and sound. Just pure fun! It´s always satistying to see the young boys in their BMWs in my rear mirror...
I had the fastback, with a 318; it was my first car. I drove it for 80,000 miles, then sold it to a friend who put another 80,000 on it. Not bad for a '60s American car. This thing took off like a rocket (though 0-60 was not really impressive), but couldn't take a corner worth beans. The power steering and brakes had too much power: brakes were touchy, and you could barely feel the road at all. It was great at 75mph, but at 85 you felt control slipping away. At 100 you were just plain scared. The interior was well done, and very comfortable, though eventually the upholstery started to crack. I never had dealer maintenance done on this car, but it just kept running. Went through 3 starter motors, though. At one point it had a weird short that caused the gas gauge to rise 1/8 tank when the lights were on; I ran out of gas twice because of that. Compared to today's cars, it was pretty low-qual, but I loved the thing.
