(3 reviews)I was discharged from the Army in November, 1962 and needed some wheels. I was driving around and passed our local Olds dealer and there was this beautiful 57 98 Convertbile. I couldn't pass it up. I turned around and drove Dad's 56 Buick Speical into the lot (Dad couldn't drive anymor due to illnes) and I looked for a salesman. I finally found one and he explained that the car had belonged to the owners wife and it was loaded. Even the J-2 option. Long, low, great lines, and and a chick magnet. I bought the car on the spot. Dad didn't care what I did with the Buick, as long as I got a car that I could take him to Church and wherever else he needed to go. I added fender skirts to it and dummy Appletons, just to make it mine, i guess and drove it through a terrible Cleveland winter. The big Olds was not the greatest in the snow. When Spring came, I cleaned and detailed the car for some summer cruising and added glasspacks, to complete the package. I drove the car all year and my younger brother was driving me crazy as he wanted that Olds. I bought a 421 63 Pointiac and sold the Olds to my brother. He got married and running low on funds sold it to a neighborhood kid. I got a call one day that the kid had taken down a pole with the Olds and it was totaled. I couldn't even go to look at it. Many times my brother and I would scan Hemmings to see if we could find one, but we couldn't afford one now. The prices are up to about $100,000 which is a far cry from the $1600 I paid in 1962
For being unrestored and fifty-two years old; it's held up very well. The engine is a solid 6.1 litre/371 V8 with 277 horsepower. It's a big heavy American old car, so gas milage isn't the highest, it doesn't stop on a dime, and it's not the fastest car off the line. But it does have a lot of style and no shortage of torque. I bet it lasts another fifty years if it's taken care of correctly.
This rose color 98 was the color and car of the year for olds in '57 Some J2 models had tri-power and Richard Petty racrd this model at Daytona.
