The all-new sixth generation 2026 Toyota RAV4 has been revealed, and it’s set to get an entirely electrified line-up for the first time. The Canadian built compact crossover (Canada’s best-selling SUV) will offer both regular hybrid and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains, plus a fast-charging port on PHEV models. It will also offer more fuel efficiency and more power than ever before.
The the new Toyota RAV4 range line-up is also getting a shake-up, with a new GR Sport trim (a first for a North American RAV4) and the Woodland model getting its own grade designation entirely. And with these powertrain and trim changes — as well as the redesign — Toyota is looking to retain itself advantage over a slew of compact SUV rivals, including the Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Mazda CX-50, Ford Escape, Subaru Forester and others.

2026 Toyota RAV4 styling
For its sixth generation, the all-new RAV4 gets greater distinction between its trims as the brand defines three different design styles: Core, Rugged, and Sport. All three incorporate C-shaped headlights similar to those on other recent Toyota designs such as the 2025 Toyota Camry and Crown Signia. Here, they’re set taller against a more squared-off front end.
The RAV4’s newly emphasized fender flares align with the designs used on other Toyota SUVs. The notched floating roof design carries over, while the new rear end features a trendy light bar across the liftgate with RAV4 emblazoned in the centre.
On the Core grades — which include LE, XLE, and Limited — a body-colour grille includes slats at the bottom similar to the Crown Signia and newer Lexus designs. 17-inch, 18-inch, or 20-inch wheels are available, depending on the grade.
The new Rugged design style is exclusive to the RAV4 Woodland, which is now a standalone trim. Its blocky grille echoes those of the brand’s larger SUVs such as the Toyota 4Runner and Land Cruiser. Here, LED lighting is added from off-road lighting equipment company Rigid Industries. The Toyota RAV4 Woodland edition sports a roughly 1-centimetre higher ride height relative to the rest of the line-up thanks to its standard all-terrain tires. Ladder-style roof rails with crossbars are also standard, as is a 1.25-inch rear accessory mount.
On the Sport grades — which include SE, XSE, and the all-new GR Sport — a gaping mesh grille highlights the more performance-oriented look. The Toyota RAV4 GR Sport also includes emphasized front and rear spoilers and exclusive GR badging. What’s more, the GR Sport is the first RAV4 developed with the help of GAZOO Racing, more normally involved with the tuning of Toyota’s sports cars such as the Supra.

New paint colours available
Several new paint colours will be offered with the 2026 RAV4 when it lands in dealerships: Brown Sugar, Everest, and Storm Cloud join the palette, while Urban Rock is exclusive to the Woodland trim. These colours will join perennial hues such as white, black, Wind Chill Pearl, Ruby Flare Pearl, and Blueprint. A two-tone paint configuration with a blacked-out roof will be available on select grades, most notably the Supersonic Red with black roof pairing exclusive to the GR Sport.
2026 Toyota RAV4 interior design and practicality
Most new RAV4 trim levels will come with either fabric or SofTex upholstery, the latter being a synthetic leatherette. Microsuede inserts are added on the RAV4 XSE and GR Sport grades. Toyota says a variety of interior colourways will be available across different trims, though details are not yet available at this writing.
Some RAV4 models will ship with a traditional shifter, while others use a sleeker shift-by-wire system. The GR Sport’s interior also adds GR logos to the front headrests and steering wheel, along with steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters and aluminum sport pedals.
A 10.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system is standard, while a 12.9-inch touchscreen is available on higher trims. Some long-time RAV4 owners may be disappointed to learn the chunky and glove-friendly climate controls are no more. For the sixth generation, they move to the bottom of the touchscreen alongside a new static home button.
Both systems come with standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus dual-phone Bluetooth connectivity. Toyota says the built-in Voice Assistant will have quicker response times, and the RAV4’s integrated map and navigation functionality will function within the standard 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. A head-up display is available on the highest grades.
These systems and others will be powered by Arene, Toyota’s new software development platform, which the brand says is a first step toward “fully software-defined vehicles.” This will also enable the new RAV4 to be the first Toyota model equipped with Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 (TSS 4.0), the details of which are forthcoming.
The default audio system comes with six speakers. On higher trims, a nine-speaker JBL premium audio system is included.
2026 Toyota RAV4 engine and drive
In the sixth-generation 2026 Toyota RAV4, electrified powertrains will be standard across the board. But while the previous RAV4 hybrid was all-wheel-drive only, the new car will come with the option of front-wheel drive (previously, front-wheel-drive models were non-hybrid).
The new RAV4 hybrid models move to Toyota’s fifth-generation hybrid system. Originally launched with the 2025 Toyota Camry, the RAV4 will be the first SUV to integrate this upgrade. It boosts power from the 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine and electric motors to 236 horsepower, an increase of 17 hp over the 2025 RAV4. (Note Toyota Canada does not release official torque figures for its electrified powertrains.)
Toyota’s sixth-generation PHEV powertrain debuts on the 2026 Toyota RAV4 plug-in hybrid. It combines a 2.5-litre, 4-cylinder engine with a pair of electric motors and a high-capacity traction battery. Total system output increases to 320 hp, up 18 hp from the previous-generation PHEV, and all-electric driving range increases by 20 percent for a total of 80 kilometres.
In Canada, the PHEV powertrain will be exclusive to the RAV4’s Sport grades. The XSE Technology Package will offer DC fast charging with a RAV4-first CCS port that’s capable of recharging the battery from 10 to 80 percent in roughly 30 minutes. The SE, XSE, and GR Sport PHEV models will come with a Level 2 (J1772) charging port only. An 11-kW AC onboard charger upgrade will also be offered.
Certain RAV4 grades get a towing upgrade in the sixth generation. The hybrid XLE, Woodland, XSE, and Limited trims, as well as the PHEV SE and XSE grades, will have a towing capacity of up to 1,587 kilograms (3,500 pounds).
The new RAV4 GR Sport trim, developed in partnership with Toyota GAZOO Racing, incorporates numerous performance upgrades including the higher-powered PHEV powertrain, a GR-tuned suspension and power steering, greater body rigidity, and 20-inch wheels with an increased offset.
As of this writing, Toyota has not announced official MPG or fuel economy figures, but expect them to marginally improve on the current hybrid powertrain model’s 6L/100km (47mpg) combined.
2026 Toyota RAV4 in Canada price and release date
Canadian pricing of the 2026 Toyota RAV4 will be announced closer to the on-sale date. With the gas-only models being dropped, we expect the base price of the RAV4 to go up in its sixth generation, likely starting at roughly the $40,000 mark and cresting past $60,000 for the GR Sport grade.
Production of the all-new 2026 Toyota RAV4 is expected to begin later this year. The hybrid models to be sold in Canada will continue to be produced at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada’s assembly plants in Cambridge and Woodstock, Ontario, while the PHEV models for Canada will continue to be produced in Japan.
