2026 GMC Canyon: Price, Specs and Release Date

by Chris Teague

Midsize trucks are a great compromise for many buyers. They offer much of the workhorse capabilities of their larger full-size counterparts without the full-size price or maneuverability headaches. The GMC Canyon is one of two trucks General Motors offers in the segment, and it features a powerful turbocharged engine, capable off-road configurations, and luxurious top trims.

What’s New for the 2026 GMC Canyon

The 2026 GMC Canyon gained a few updates, including available black badges, a new Nightfall Essential Package for the AT4 trim, a dedicated AT4X model, a new paint colour, and updated wheel options.

Design

The Canyon borrows styling elements from the larger and more expensive Silverado, especially in the front end where it has a similar upright grille and prominent LED daytime running lights (DRLs). GMC offers a range of trims with several wheel options, and the rugged AT4X model features a lift kit with beefy all-terrain tires.

Powertrain

GMC only offers one powertrain option for the Canyon, but it’s a strong one. The turbocharged 2.7-litre four-cylinder engine produces 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque, which in Canada routes through standard four-wheel drive (4WD) via an eight-speed automatic transmission. While the truck lost its diesel option a few years back, the current turbo-four delivers strong torque and horsepower numbers, and GMC equips a range of trailering tech that makes towing much less stressful.

Interior

The 2026 Canyon is only available in a crew cab format with five seats. Cloth upholstery comes standard, but higher trims step up to synthetic or genuine leather. Heated and ventilated front seats, memory settings, and a heated steering wheel are available (but none of these features comes standard). While the front seats are wide and spacious, the back seats are extremely short on legroom, limiting the Canyon’s ability to accommodate adults.

Technology

The Canyon comes standard with an 11-inch digital gauge cluster and an 11.3-inch touchscreen. Other default tech features include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, SiriusXM radio, USB ports, a subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspot, voice commands, and six speakers. GMC offers Bose stereo upgrades, wireless charging, dual-zone automatic climate controls, and additional USB ports. The Canyon’s infotainment system is responsive and easy to use, and the interface looks great on the large, high-resolution display.

Safety

The 2026 Canyon has not yet been tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) or the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Standard driver-assist features in Canada include automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high beams, a rearview camera, pedestrian and cyclist detection, and GM's Teen Driver mode. Higher trims add adaptive cruise control, a head-up display, and GM’s safety alert seat.
