what is causing my pontiac sunbird to heat up and heater is not producing heat

on my 92 pontiac sunbird the temperature gauge is going to red then dropping then going back up. There is no heat coming from heater. Fan is blowing cold air. I changed the thermostat but it did not help.

Could be your heater core. A small radiator looking device located in the dash behind the firewall. check for an antifreeze leak on the passenger floorboard. Are your windows fogging up when you start it. Ill bet its your heater core.
