Every now and then my 2001 Pontiac Aztek won't start. If I let it sit for at least 20 minutes, it will. What causes this?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a new fuel pump.  My mechanic can't figure out the problem, either. It
seems that if I do not turn the key completely far enough that will trigger the
problem.  But, even then, sometimes it will not start.
It happened again today and after letting it sit for 15 minutes, key out of the
ignition, it still did not start.  20 minutes seems to be the minimum that I have to
let it sit before it will start.  It is not the battery, either.

Could be any number of things. If it were a sensor issue, you should have a check engine light. Since it seems to be solely tied to starting function... If it is not turning over then it ...... Could be a bad starter solenoid... Could be a bad ignition switch If it turning over but not starting.... Could be a fuel pump or relay.. Maybe even a crank sensor..

It was the cam shaft position sensor. It's fixed, now.

I had a Malibu, doing the same thing,,the ignition switch doesn't recognise the key,and the antitheft cuts the power to the fuel pump,,so I was surprised that the fix was a crank position sensor

My mechanic also first suspected a security problem. It turned out not to be the answer.
