Thoughts on fleet/rental vehicles

Asked by User Oct 03, 2020 at 02:08 PM about the 2020 Toyota Camry XSE FWD

Question type: General

I know most people say they wont buy or say
dont buy a ex fleet or rental vehicle....so...I
want to know what the CarGurus
community's experiences have been.
Has anyone here ever owned one of these
vehicles?
If so..what make, model, year, mileage when
purchased?

I really like the new Camry XSE and SE
models. But for a used 19 XSE with a V4 @
$28,000 is ridiculous. Ive got a 18 Tacoma
limited V6 4x4 and the V6 has a serious lack
of power until the rubberband gets twisted
tight. I havent drove a XSE yet but i feel the
V4 will not impress me.
However, I drove a 19 Maxima rental car for
about 40 days and i know for a fact the
Maxima has plenty of power and alot of
power and pedal still available at 90mph. A
19 or 20 Maxima V6 loaded ex fleet 15-25k
miles @ $23,000 is a awesome price
considering the same 20 Maxima new is
over $42,000 and a 1 owner not a ex fleet is
$29,000+

In 1983 my parents bought an 81 Chevy Caprice with 48,000 miles on it that had been a Hertz Rent A Car. It was a piece of junk! In 1986 they traded it in. It was the only time my parents dumped a car before it was paid for! Rental vehicles are usually driven hard by many different people who really don't care about them. But on the upside they're usually pretty well maintained by the rental company. They don't want their customers getting broken down in them. Not good PR! Hope that helps! Jim

A one or two year old used Toyota is going to be priced pretty close to a new one with discounts. This has always been the case. You have to wait around 4 to 5 years for a used car to depreciate enough to make it a work. Rentals depreciate quicker due to many people driving them and getting used hard. But it's one way you can get into a car you like for cheaper. The decision is ultimately yours.
