I want to know if the transmission from a
2004 Nissan Extra 4x4 will work in a 1997
Nissan Pathfinder 4x4

They both use the RE4R01A, so it should be direct swap, but I would double check the wiring connections. Even then you should be able to pull connectors from the old Pathfinder unit and transfer them to the Xterra one. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jatco_4R01_transmission
