I am looking at purchasing a 1997 Ford Ranger XL Reg Cab 2 WD Shortbed 4cyl asking price is $3,950. Clean no accidents (clean carfax), body in great condition considering how old the truck is. Is this a good price? Never purchased a pick up truck before and need one now that I own a house... Any advice would be helpful.

Yes...these are pretty good...my neighbor Santoni keeps his running daily has untold miles...seems to be a bit fragile on the door and window handle durability~

that 6-cylinder is a hearty mill...the distributors frequently have electrical troubles and take a bit of a fashion to put right~ the spur gear and roll pin tends to befuddle most mechanics and simply order a new distributor with module already in that~
Great little truck! Take a good look at the steering components for wear or at least take a good look at the tire wear. They 4 cylinder has no distributor (since 1988) and is a long life little trooper. Don't expect great gas mileage or awesome power but it will do just about anything you ask of it. That's a decent price.
they are reliable,i have had a few rangers 3.0 and 4.0 4x4 my brother and nephew had 4cyls and where very reliable as well.i find the asking price way to high for a 97 base 4cyl model.
Thanks for the responses. Small pickup trucks in the North Carolina area has a high demand since most want them for either commuting to work and or going to the dump, Home Depot to purchase stuff for the house. This is my reason since I only have a car and don't want to mess up the interior....For the low miles this is the best deal I've seen thus far in the area... Toyotas and Nissans are much higher. A 2001 Toyota Tacoma with 156K miles was $8,000 and no negotiating....
in your area it might be a good deal.here our Canadian winters and the salt they use is horrible for are vehicles.you be hard pressed to find a 97 that's not rusted or even rotted.i undercoat mine every year they hold up very wel but most people don't.so it come down to what you want and need and what its worth to you.if its mint I could be a great deal for your area.
