I have a 2005 Nissan Maxima SE. When the a/c is off, the car makes a loud and complex clacking sound from under the hood.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

This problem began this morning when I went to work, and I thought a belt bearing was failing.  But the noise does not increase in frequency or decibels when rpm is increased, so that made me think a/c, and so when I got in the car tonight I turned on the a/c, and sure enough, the noise stopped.   What's going on?  Will this cause a breakdown or ruin my a/c  if I just leave the a/c on?  Can I fix this myself (I can do part replacement if I can get to the part)?

did you look at the belt tensioner...when they wear the belt swims to one side and creates abrasion on the side of the belt....how's the belt doin? perhaps you need a new idler pulley on the tensioner~
