Hum Noise from tires

Asked by GuruHLQRX Jul 19, 2019 at 06:35 AM about the 2019 Kia Optima EX Turbo FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I've bought the same car since 2012 and I've owned (2) 2019's. I got rid of
one after an accident and got a brand new one. As of now the car we are
talking about has 3000 miles.

When I got the car it had Kumo ta 91 0r 31 I forgot. It had a humming noise. I
took it to the dealer where I bought it and they couldn't hear it. after I
complained I had the tech in the car with me he heard it but said it was
normal it was the vibration of the road into the tires. I near heard a higher
pitched noise such as that.  Yes standard Road noise but not a high pitch
noise.

I then went to discount tire and bought Michelin Premier's the second I drove
off the lot I heard that same noise.  I got my technician in the car and HE
HEARD THE SAME THING.  They blamed the car and told me to take it to
Kia to check the bearings.  Before I took it to KIA I told them to please rotate
the tire.  they did and the noise was still there but I think it moved.

Yesterday 7/18/19  I took it to KIA in Daytona of course they didn't hear
anything and said the bearings were good.  I took it back to discount tire I
wanted them to try to swap out the tires. I spoke to the manager and instead
of working with me he asked me to go to his mechanic that he recommended
and the mechanic heard the noise.  We rotated it again and still heard it (he
said in the same place) I don't know.  He documented it for me and then I
took it to my dealer where I bought the car.

When I took it to my dealer I drove it with 3 people.  a When the noise came
up and it was loud I pointed it out none of them could hear it.

I am very upset.  like I said I had one car before this one (same year) and
never complained. I do hear a higher pitched noise or low hum I called
corporate fo kia and discount tire and have a case opened for Michelin.

There was one mistake I made I will admit. I should of let kia handle to
kumo's at first instead of buying the Michelin because now kia has an out.
But when i first bought the car in there at first they didn't hear anything then
when I demanded the tech ride with me he heard it and said it was normal

Do you have any advice I'm very down about this I know I hear something
and 2 others did but it's kia's word. they make me feel like I'm crazy hearing
things when I'm not.  Ii'm 51 years old i've bought cars all my life I should
know a bad noise when I hear one.  Even though Discount tire should just
put another set on for diagnoses reasons they won't

Please give feedback.

U keep blaming the tires but 2 sets with same noise doesn't seem right? I would try taking it to a shop who maybe has a dynamometer or something like this where they can actually run the car in place and the tires will spin to see if its in front drive train. See if they will pop the hood and listen inside engine compartment. Tell them at what speed/rpm's you hear it, if certain accessories are on at same time, etc. Ask if you can be there and listen. It may be transmission related, belts spinning thus pulleys spinning, etc. Also tire rating could have a bearing on it. Some are harder or more heavily threaded than others (like jeep tires) thus have different impact on road.. If u bought same rating on tires they could play the same role in noise. Let us know what u find out. Hope this might help

I owned a pre owned 2012 Kia Optima Ex and never had a problem with it. I traded it in for the new 2019. After about a month i started hearing a humming/ ticking noise which seems to come from under the brake/ gsd pedal area. I took it to the dealer and they said that was normal because the GDI injects more psi (whatever) them most cars. MY car is 5 months old now and the noise is louder then ever!!! People on the side of the road LOOK AT ME when i stop for a light!! THIS CAN'T BE NORMAL!! Any advise would be great!!
