Clancking from under the hood Mazda protege 2000

Asked by Griffith_766 Mar 02, 2017 at 01:03 AM about the 2000 Mazda Protege LX

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a Mazda Protege year 2000 and there's a problem that driving me
crazy.
Most of the times, when the car is completely stopped there's a ratteling
sound coming from under the hood that soud like fast clancking.
It happens when the car is warm/cold and when the AC is on/off.
When ever i try to replicate it to actually look under the hood and try to find
the cause it stopps and then come back after a while.
I don't know if it's related but i see very small oil staiins under the hood, oil
levels in the engine are fine.
Any ideas or someone who experienced it?

Thank you

Too vague a description to really offer any help, other than to suggest trying to better pinpoint the noise - prop the hood open and have someone drive it no more than 2MPH while you walk alongside it and listen for the noise, then put it in park and have your assistant rev the engine, again listen for the noise. That might help you determine if it is engine related, brakes, suspension or steering, or exhaust related.

Like i said the noise only appears when the car is completely stopped the second i hit the gas it stopps.

Loosen the serpentine belt and check all the belt pulleys, also feel along the catalytic converter (when it's cool) and see if the heat shield is loose, there may be another heat shield(s) around the exhaust manifold or starter motor. Even though the AC works, you may still have a bearing rattling around in the AC compressor clutch. I can throw guesses at you all day, you'll just have to crawl inside that engine bay and hunt it down. A mechanic's stethoscope would be an ideal tool to use but a long screwdriver or length of pipe pressed against a potential trouble spot and your ear works well too.
