Hauling a Trailer with 2018 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium

Asked by stepcsmith2002 Feb 05, 2020 at 06:42 PM about the 2018 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium AWD

Question type: General

The owner's manual for our 2018 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium says not to
tow a trailer without electric brakes that is over 1,000 lbs.  Those with electric
brakes can weigh up to 2,700 lbs.  This was news to me, as I've towed
trailers over 1,000 lbs, but less than 2,700 lbs, that did not have electric
brakes.  What is your opinion on this subject?  If I buy a camping trailer over
1,000 lbs, should it have electric brakes, and should I install brake controllers
on the Outback?  Also, can my Outback be used to regularly tow a camping
trailer?  Thank you for any advice/assistance you can offer.

Fore safety you need trailer brakes which means a brake controller unless you have surge brakes on the trailer. I personally do not recommend a Subaru for towing.
