How to disconnect the alternator on a Lincoln Continental 1998

Brand new battery, car started right up.  Disconnected battery cables,
next day reconnected cables, turned the key and. The car lights radio, etc
went on briefly, then died, never started the engine.   What could be
wrong?

Ceck battery voltage, should be 12.4vdc, check all battery cables for corrosion and make sure they're tight
