When does the 3rd brake light eliminate

I have pulled over at night  And the reason for the officer
pulling l me over he said it was  the 3 brake light was not
working does the 3rd brake light stay   A luminated when
the run light are on or  do they only come on when i  hit the
brakes

They only illuminate when the brakes are applied.

The third, or high mount, stop light will only illuminate when the brake pedal is pressed. It will not flash with the 4 way hazard emergency flashers. Hope that helps! Jim
