what is the correct voltage going to the fuel sending unit on a 1995 jeep cherokee

only getting 5.8 volts on the 3 prong wiring harness terminals going to the fuel pump/fuel sending unit. what should the correct voltage be,
car wouldn't start and had no pressure at the fuel rail. i found the quick disconnect pigtail near the sending unit and checked voltage, each terminal to chassis ground

It does not matter what voltage is going to the sending unit. The sending unit changes the amount of ground potential that the gauge sees. On the electrical connector at the fuel pump, you have three wires. One is ground for the pump. One is 12 volt power to run the pump. The third is for the sending unit and you will read whatever voltage that is leaving the gauge on the dash. --- Be concerned with finding a good ground on one wire and seeing 12 volts on another wire when the fuel pump should be running.

you will have to be quick because the computer will shut power off to fuel pump in 2 to 4 seconds while trying to start the engine, if the computer does not see the that motor is running it will shut power off at that 12 volt wire.

orange wire should have 12 volts for abt. 3 seconds. be ready with a test light and have someone flip on the key.
