I have a 1999 isuzu trooper that occasionally upon starting out from a stop in 1st gear the tranny slips and grabs instantly and squeeks the tires and takes off. If I start off very gently it doesn't seem to happen. Solution?

1st gear slips when starting off and grabs when I start but not all the time and
not if I accelerate very gently.  Ideas of the cause?

I'm not well versed on the Trooper so I'm not sure if theres an inherent issue with the transmission but my general knowledge thinks that maybe the clutch pack is getting weak or the torque converter is wearing out. The cheapest and easiest place to start would be checking the fluid level first then replacing the transmission fluid and filter unless you know that's its been done within the last couple years. There are Isuzu Trooper forums online and I encourage you to check them out, there may be a common issue known to the community

I changed the fluids and filter but it made no difference. Mileage is about 140K, runs great. If I start out gentle it doesn't do it. One of those things that you just put up with until it fails totally and rebuild it. thanks for the info
