Speedometer not working after I changed the cluster light

Asked by xefo1000 Nov 27, 2020 at 04:51 PM about the 2004 INFINITI I35 FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I had a bad speedometer cluster (lights went out) and replaced it with a used
one off ebay. The new one worked and lights were all OK, but the speed
meter was not working (the pointer was not moving when I drove the car).
Does anyone know if this kind of repair requires additional programming by
the dealer to get the speed gauge to work or not? Frankly, I believe the new
unit comes with bad meter. Can anyone share their thoughts? Thanks

If this speedometer is electrical and not mechanical you are probably seeing the result of it not being plugged into the lead wire. Look at both ends of the cable from the trans (i think) to the meter (under dash).

Thank you. I think the speedometer is mechanical (it is a pointer or arm like in a clock) and not electrical (not digital). It looks like the one in the attached picture. If it is mechanical based on my description, do you agree with me that it is bad speedometer? FYI, I put back the old speedometer cluster and noticed that the speedometer pointer/arm moves normally when I drive. I appreciate your opinion.

If you can swap the bad one for your original that works, I would try that first. Most gauges can be removed independently from the cluster with little difficulty and an abundance of care.
