Is is ok to put a 255/40/17 Tire on the front ?

I accidentally gave the tire store the rear tire size to replace the front tires. I allowed the tire store to mount them and have only noticed a little bit of performance difference. I have no rubbing issues. My main concern is will my rack n pinion steering become effected by this bigger tire on the front ? The tire owner says he does this all the time on my type of cars. Just trying to get some input.

Thanks for the feedback. Update is my car is a 328i not 323i. If that makes a difference probably not.
