Transmission issues 2000 ford focus zx3

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hello, I am a new member and in need of some tips/advice..
I have a 2000 ford focus ZX3 with 165K miles, perfect engine, but the transmission is giving me trouble. It is not shifting like it should. heres what it does. If I press the gas and go around 25-30 it will messup and shift terribly but if I floor it the car shifts like a brand new car. barely any issues. plus if im going at a stable set speed and let off the gas and then re engage the gas it will mess all up and go all the way to about 4 or 5K RPM then it would get into gear and it would kick or make a nasty noise when it does get back into gear. What do I need to do to fix this? I'm more of a computer guy, im not that great with cars but I'm not bad either.. I just need some info because I don't want to get screwed when I go to the tranmission repair shop.. do you think i need a rebuild or does it sound like something small?
Also is there anything else I should do at 165K miles? I really love my car and i want to keep it for another 165K miles:)

When was the last time you have your transmission fluid replaced? Sounds like you're driving an automatic so you should check on the fluids first since that would be the cheapest thing to do first. 165K miles on the engine huh? I didn't realize this little car I have was that reliable...oh I have 2003 ZX3 5spd. Oh, and you said you were a computer guy; would you say your career is IT? If so, we are identical. ^_^

sounds like the clutches inside the tranny are burned up,or a sensor is bad.

My focus does the same thing and if i punch on the gas its okay. I took it to ford a year and a half ago and they said i need a new tranny for 2100 dollars but its still running. Ford put in some messed up trannies in the focus
