Hi everyone,

I have an 02 Elantra, with 125k on it. It is having a number of symptoms- when the car starts it idles low (150-300RPM), sometimes upon starting the car will putter and jerk then be fine other times it dies and will restart after a few minutes. These problems started occurring when the car was low on fuel (quarter of a tank or less) but currently the car has a full tank and will not start.

All the lights will come on, as will the radio. The battery has no visible corrosion. The car is not clicking when trying to start- it just seems as if the fuel is not igniting. The check engine light is not on and has not come on.

So far I have replaced the spark plugs and wires- which did not fix the problem.

Any ideas? Anyone had a similar problem?

Hi GuruS9HRS, My issue turned out to be a blown Fuel Pump fuse. Best of luck with yours!

It can be a number of things unfortunately and each situation can be different even having the same problem. But most have been fixed by replacing the purge valve under the hood. 1st you should listen for your fuel pump. If you hear it then I’d move on to the valve. 1. Fuel pump ⛽️ if ok 2. Purge valve 3. Canister vent valve under the car 4. Charcoal canister ( I rebuilt mine for $25) 5. Check for spark ( could be plugs wires or coils) 6. Check pulse to injectors There are lots of videos showing how to check all these things. You can spend the day going over everything. I tried a few and the more videos I watched the more I figured it had to be my evap system bc it would run great all week till I’d open the cap and fill with gas. I couldn’t put more than 3/4 tank otherwise it’d act even worse. And eventually after a few months dealing with the stall at the pump it wouldn’t stay running. So I changed the purge valve, vent valve and rebuilt my canister. Now I can fill up just fine. My MAP sensor went out the next day so that was replaced. ( car would just shut off while driving. Nothing could keep it running and most times I’d need 5-30minb4 it’d start and run for a little while. If I babied it it would last longer. If I drove normal it’d shut down quickly. Check engine code was p0107 for map sensor)
