Temperature gauge issue

My son bought a 2005 Pontiac Montana,
the temperature gauge is (sprung or
wrapped) the veh does not and according
to the previous owner, never has had a
temp issue. The previous owner said the
batt was dead so he jumped the veh, when
the gauge failed or sprung? If it helps
trouble shoot the horn doesn't work either.
My son located the horn relay and fuse.
Fuse is good. Not sure how to check the
relay. Could jumping the veh effect the
temp gauge? Any ideas?

There are some videos on how to test relays would start there first. If that is a big hassle and you don't want to try that just get another relay and give it a shot. My other ideas are to locate the instrument cluster fuse and try a reset plug and unplug to see if it changes the gauge in any way. If that does not help it may be the temperature sensor itself. Last but not least the stepper motor inside the cluster is not calibrated or is damaged. They have tiny gears inside that can strip out. If you are to dig deeper and it is the gauge itself it might be possible to pull the needle part off the gauge set to zero with car off/cold but as mentioned it might be a broken gear inside the motor itself and only be a temporary fix..
