Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The compressor went out now it will not idle
without continuously pressing the gas
pedal.  Can I bypass (disconnect) to not
have the strain on the serpintine belt or do I
have to fix the compressor to fix idle
problem.

Autozone sells a by pass pulley for that reason. Cheap even. About 20 bucks

On the AC compressor pulley, that is almost just like the by pass pulley you would put on there. If there is something wrong in how that pulley is spinning on the AC compressor then you could either fix it (easy job) for about just as much as if you were to by a by pass pulley for. If you don't plan on using the AC, then put on the by pass pulley.
