Is a 2001 Ford Taurus Engine interchangeable with a 2004?

I have a working running engine in
a 2001 ford Taurus it is a 3.0 and
looks to me to be identical to my
2004 3.0. can I replace the 2001
with the 2004?

How do I detect whether it's OVH or DHOC

Last question I promise... Based on VIN the 2001 says 3.0 L MF/OVH and 2004 says MF/FFV OVH. Is there a difference?
