Honda Accord LX check engine light, tranny, & code

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So I bought my Accord of Craigslist from what I
thought to be a trustworthy guy ( yes I know, my
mistake ‍♀️) long story short he had someone turn
the check engine light off and now I’m stuck with it,
but I’m not too mad bc it’s a solid car regardless of
the issues I am having, it’s got a lil over 240,000
miles on it  but he’s a fuckin beast
Anyway this fuckin code P1457 EVAP control
system leakage (evap canister area) is coming up
I have recently changed the oil and put in some
Lucas oil treatment to stop leaks hoping that if
there were that would fix any leaks but so far no
luck.
Also the mechanic that I have working on the car
wants to change the tranny fluid because I have
told him The Pickle (which is my cars name) shifts
funny it’s almost like a hiccup. But I’m hesitate to
have him do it because I’ve heard mixed opinions
on whether or not to change/flush the fluid because
it’ll cause more damage then it’s worth.
I just need to get my Pickle inspected so I’m not
driving around just waiting to get a ticket. Someone
please tell me something

That code in short is an emissions code. Long answer is it doesn't affect engine performance but if you live in a state that requires a yearly inspection it probably won't pass with that code going. Likely the EVAP canister shut valve is causing this. Another thing to check is sometimes if the gas cap isn't on right, or doesn't fit or just isnt on at all it can cause this error code. Should be fine to drive without worry though. As for your transmission fluid it is important to change it at correct service intervals just like engine oil. There should be no harm in flushing and changing this fluid and this can help The transmission shift properly if it is a bit rough. Possible that the previous owner hasn't changed it in some time as this often goes unserviced for owners that are unaware of important service intervals. The only time this could be an issue is if there is some suspended metal shavings in the fluid that may get lodged upon draining but if your mechanic suggests it I would tend to agree.

Thank you so very much! I was doing some research and even tho just from putting gas in the car I knew it wasn’t the gas cap, even tho that would’ve been great cause I could have fixed it right away So I’m just gonna go ahead and get a new valve and have him replace that and the tranny fluid. But I seriously appreciate your know& wisdom because I’m trying to learn as much as possible so I can do everything myself, eventually

Oh and of course I live in NY so yeah I believe we need an emissions test. But I’m not too worried about the inspection because cops aren’t trying to pull anyone over to give them an inspection ticket during this pandemic especially when it won’t even fill their quota I do eventually want to have it done so I don’t have to drive like I’m in “driver’s Ed” every time I see a cop ‍♂️
