2002 Honda Civic won't start but has rapid clicking noise when trying

Asked by Realm Feb 11, 2019 at 10:25 AM about the 2002 Honda Civic Coupe EX

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2002 Honda Civic coupe died while driving on the freeway. It would not
restart so I had to get it towed. The next morning, I tried to restart with no luck.
All I would get is flickering dashboard lights and a rapid clicking noise. The
power windows work very slowly and the lights on the dashboard are dimmer
than usual. Is the issue the battery?

Hi Realm. It sounds to me that your alternator went out and killed your battery. Check your battery connections first, and make sure they are clean and good. Then, try jump starting it, and after it starts, take the jumper cable off. If it dies again, it's your alternator or fuse/relay for the alternator. If it continues on running, your battery is defective.

Thank you for your help! I tried to jumpstart the Civic and it actually sounded like it was about to start! There's no more flickering, so I assume the jump gave it some charge to the battery, as the headlights, dashboard and power windows seem to be normal but the radio wouldn't turn on. The only icon on the dashboard that stayed on is the battery icon, so it's gotta be the battery.
