I have a 2002 Envoy 4.2 Engine 4 by 4 now it cranks good
and stars good but the engine temperature gauge works
and sometimes it doesn't and when it doesn't work in a cut
the car off and I tried to crank it again it's hard to get it
cranked but eventually it will crank there is no engine light
on

I'd look at your temperature sensor, lucky you, on 02' the sensor is right above the thermostat, which would be a great time to replace that as well. 06' + is on the otherside of engine and very hard to get to.
