Camshaft Positioning Sensor?

Asked by Jessica Oct 30, 2019 at 08:55 PM about the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT Z71 Double Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So. Husband's vehicle, looking for advice, please.
2014 Chevrolet 1500 LT Z71 4x4 V8 5.3 L Di FFV. Throwing
code (waiting to hear exactly what the code number was,
but both our local and actually helpful Chevy dealership and
two different Autozone's said same) number 3 cylinder
misfiring.  170,000 miles I believe it has on it. Work truck
out in lovely west Texas.

Instead of spending $600 bucks on dealerships replacing
sparkplugs, did himself. Something new I learned (I've
replaced just about everything myself on my 1997 Ford
F150, had that baby since I could drive and has been the
best truck and great teacher along with necessity and my
late father) is that he has a Direct Injection vehicle that
does not use the traditional "plugs and wires" but instead
these little and rather easy and convenient Ignition Coil
Packs along with the plugs. I was rather jealous when he
changed it out so quick and easy

ANYHOW, changed sparkplugs. Still misfiring. Found and
replaced the one ignition coil on cylinder 3 after code kept
throwing. Went almost 24 hours and it is throwing the exact
same code. He's at work now and Autozone told him it's
probably the Camshaft Positioning Sensor.  Sound legit
to everyone else? That's one thing I've never had to mess
with, personally. But reading what I can on the topic he has
had some idling issues and vague rough shifting
(automatic) issues.

Looking further as he has this DI and the plugs were so
much easier I'm thinking this sensor might be as well? The
autozone guy was pretty much saying he'd have to take off
half the front of the engine (pulleys, covers, etc) to get to it
and even though their website lists a few different
camshaft sensors for his vehicle he needed the "most
expensive" on the list .. but I found one video on
YouTube replacing the camshaft actuator and it wasn't that
hard to get to. Older model vehicles going up through the
bottom to get to the sensor.. but for the life of me can't find
a good video of his year model.... anyone have a link to
one?

Anyhow, now that I've rambled thank you for the advice!

Sorry, I tried to post again to format it so it wasn't in one huge chunk of writing but it's not recognizing my paragraphs for some reason?

I suspect a bad connection to the no. 3 coil. check the wires where it connects and make sure you are plugging it in correctly and it is secure Look inside the connection to see if any pins are pushed back and not making the connection..CPS not likely
