What is causing heater air to blow out of defroster vent instead of floor vent when selected

When I turn on my heater and try to have heat directed toward my feet (in the
front seats) the warm air instead comes out defroster vents blowing in my face.
What is causing this? The van was brand new when we bought it and it has
always done this.

Check the blend doors they not be opening and closing correctly.

In my opinion, joemom is correct about the blend doors. When switching between the air blowing towards the floor and the defroster if you hear clicking sounds inside the dash or the air is not diverting to the proper area, its most likely the blend doors. It's kind of a lengthy process to fix being that you have to take the dashboard off, and replace the broken part, usually between the motor and the door that diverts the air.
