So what I would do is get a scanner you can get them for 45$ at wal mart they have the little red autel scanner and it's really a good little tool. You need to read the codes, whenever the check engine light comes on it means that there is a d.t.c. (diagnostic trouble code) saved in the ecm and this will aid in hunting down the issue. I've seen transmission valve bodies be the issue and I've also been told you can reset the e.c.m. and some cars run fine. You can also reset ecm and turn the dash warning lights off by disconnecting the negative battery terminal for 5 mins. Honestly there probably is something up with your car for it to act this way and it could be transmission related.

In order to avoid WalMart I'd grab an alternative. My favorite is the rugged little orange ACTRON for about $35. Simply read and record the code(s), then try to erase. Disconnect battery only if a CEL persists. If a real problem continues it will throw a CEL within the first three restarts/drives. THEN chase service to repair. Let me know what it was. Good luck.
