Nissan Versa CVT Transmissoom

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Is there a way to tell if replacement CVT installed
by the dealer was new or refurbished?

A nissan dealer service shop just replaced my CVT.
Because of something that happened while my car
was at the shop I am now concerned that they may
have installed a refurbished transmission, instead
of a new transmission. Can one tell if the
transmission is new or refurbished based on the
serial number? is there another way to determine
this?

can you view the serial number on the tranmission
if the car is on a lift? is there a computer code on
the car that would have the serial number for the
transmission that was recently installed?

the dealer claimed that they would have to order
the transmission. that it was not in stock. would
the parts dept at the dealership have an invoice for
the transmission starting if it was a refurbished or
brand new transmission? when a dealer orders a
part, where do they typically order it from? from
nissan directly? somewhere else? the company the
dealer ordered the part from would have info about
whether the transmission was new or refurbished,
correct?

a reddit post told me that of the part # on the invoice ends in RE then the part is remanufactured. the redditor also told me it would be nearly impossible for me to get a brand new transmission. is this true that new transmissions would not be available? that sounds weird to me.

The dealer likely installed what is call a remanufactured transmission. Faulty transmissions cores that go back to the manufacture and are rebuilt there to new specs. You shouldn't need to worry as the transmission probably has a warranty on it.
