Check engine light flashes when I go over 20 mph, I smell fuel and rough idle

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I drive an 06 Subaru impreza, I wasn't doing
anything out of the norm just driving to
work, I was floating around 75 to 80 mph I
heard a pop almost like a backfire then I
smelled gas.  I pulled over and checked the
car, nothing appeared to be leaking and the
light went off.  I pulled back off on to the
highway, as soon as I shifted to second
gear the CE icon started flashing again, the
idle was lower than usual and I felt the car
start to shake a bit.  Any ideas?

First of all stop driving it before you do more damage or burn it to the ground. Get it towed in to a reputable mechanic.

Its in line for a shop now, initially im just getting it checked but I was hoping someone might have had this issue before and they knew what to look for so the mechanic doesn't try to screw me

The check engine flashing has to do with too much fuel not being burnt and the possibility of it hurting the catalytic converter. Not sure what your pop could have been..
