2014 Ford escape SE with coolant in cylinder #3

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The dealer told me that they found coolant in cylinder #3 (all over the plug). I
was thinking head gasket, they say no.  If it were the gasket it would be leaking
in more than one cylinder. Is that right? they told me to put a new engine in it,
saying the head or block are probably cracked. Has anyone seen this, how did
you fix it, can it be tied to a recall?

Get a second opinion from an independent shop, dealers just want your money. You have just as much of a chance that it is a blown head gasket as it is a cracked cylinder head, the real rub here is it will have to be torn down to check it out and it is labor intensive as most shops just drop out the entire drivetrain to do any kind of engine work. So they maybe thinking in the long run it might be cheaper just to replace the engine while it’s out and save the disassembly and head testing costs. But even that will be cheaper with an independent shop, and they can price it both ways, repair or replace the engine.
