I have a '98 Dodge Durango that sounds like it is running out of gas. It spits and sputters and dies. Pushing in the gas pedal to rev the engine does not help. Durango eventually dies. How are the spark plugs, wires rotor and cap ? Have you added an fuel injector cleaner to a full tank of gas ? Is the gas in the tank old, if so replace it with new. Have your battery load tested and check if the alternator is giving out over 14 volts like it should, our Durangos need their battery to be at its best or you can get all sorts of problems Could also be in need of a throttle body clean up. Start with these cheaper things before you go to the more expencive ones.

If it still has catalytic converters then check them, older vehicles tend to build up so much carbon in the filter that it doesn't let the exhaust breathe as it should, resulting in symptoms exactly like you're describing. Sometimes exhaust systems are somewhat modular and allow you to take them apart in pieces so you could check the converters visually or even with a water hose or compressed air. Obviously we're looking for adequate flow and if not you can replace the catalytic converters or if it's an offroad vehicle just do away with them and run straight pipes in their place.

Clean your map/mav sensor. It's located somewhere on your throttle body/air intake. That little diode measures the amount of O2 in the air and adjusts the amount of fuel to send to the injectors. If it gets just a little dirty it throws off the whole system. Squirt it once or twice with engine cleaner. Be careful though. It's delicate and expensive. It'll improve your mpg too..
