brake pedal won't depress in order to start the car after shutting the engine off

Is the brake pedal moving at all? Even with engine off it should move a little, enough to trigger the switch that allows a push button car to start. The pedal shouldn't have to move much for it to start. The switch on the pedal can be adjusted so it only needs a slight amount of movement versus requiring the pedal to travel far. If the pedal isn't moving at all, then you have a brake problem; a bad master cylinder, or something is obstructing the pedal lever.
