I had a similar issue with my '01 Durango. Just recently I had the CV Trans axle replaced and I still had a nasty grinding sound. It turned out to be the front shaft propeller. A bearing blew a hole in it. Fortunately the front shaft was only bolted on so it could be removed. If it slides into the transfer case it can't be removed. I can still drive my truck but I can't use the 4 wheel drive. Sounds like it may be that or its just the u joint. I've had lots of issues with the drivers front tire with the CV trans axle and the bearings in the hub. Sometimes things aren't greased up like they should be and they will break. I hope this helps you out!

Sounds like the 4 wheel drive is trying to engage on its on it could be that the linkage to the stick is loose and needs to be adjusted or if it is turn button it my be lack of vacuum it changes from hi to low and two high off of vacuum it might have a pinched line or broken hose
