Compressor makes noise

Compressor makes grinding noise when i turn air
or heat on. Is the compressor suppose to come on
with heat? Cause i dont think so. But im no
mechanic. Isnt there a way to turn heat on and nit
have compressor on? I feel like this might be a
dumb question.  But i dont care lol

The AC compressor will come on with the defroster, but not just the heat. (the AC evap coil is used by the defroster to dehumidify the air blowing on the windshield). If the compressor is cycling on and off it's usually due to being low on refrigerant. If it's grinding, then you likely have a problem with a bearing.
