Key won't turn in ignition

Asked by Schwartez Jan 10, 2016 at 06:01 PM about the 2011 Kia Rio Base

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

All of a sudden, the key won't turn in the ignition. It goes in, and turns to the first click, where the radio and stuff can turn on. But it won't budge from there. I've tried all of the obvious solutions, and a bunch of other stuff. I messed with the steering wheel, jiggled/tapped the key, messed with the transmission, disconnected the battery, and on and on. I'm thinking I need to replace the part, but I'm not sure exactly which part, or what it's called. I don't want to buy or replace anything unnecessary, and I'm hoping to do the job myself.

Yeah, spent 2 hours spraying WD40 into it and putting the key in and out, and turning it back and forth, cleaning off any gunk coming out on the key, etc. Tried blowing air in the keyhole. Feel like I tried everything, though I know that's not true.

Hi! my rio 2010 also won’t start, the ignition key tunrs on the accessories but at ON position the check engine light blinks every 7 to 10 secs and at ignation it only cranks. i i have it checked we found no other problem, even my obd2 scanner doesnt turn on at the on position. I suspect a bad ignition switch also...

Finaly got my rio running last mid June... it was a bad ECU....took it to a shop here in Makati Philipines and the tech guy told me it was that pesky capacitor... He cracked it open and replaced the capcitor and now it has been 3 months and it is still working...
