The battery is Completely  dead after sitting for a long period of time.  How do
you recharge the battery?

A lot of chargers will not charge a totally dead battery. Odds are the battery is not salvageable but you can trick the charger into working if you have another good battery that you can hook up in parallel to the dead battery. The charge of the good battery tricks the charger into charging.
