2011 Pilot engine pinging.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Mom took her my 2011 Pilot in for assessment on pinging.  Mechanic said
engine was bad; take it to the junk yard.  It has 112,000 miles;  Im going to
have her take it to honda dealer to give me an assessment the issues.  
Question is:  Would this make sense that the engine is bad on a nine year old
car?
