Is the alternator air cover and horn on a 2005 focus 2.0 duratec engine really necessary?

Is that plastic cover and air horn on the back of the alternator really critical? It a p.i.t.a to get it back on, and i can't really see the purpose of it.

it keeps the alt a little cooler.if it runs fine with it off,leave it off,
