2010 Grand Cherokee won’t start- electrical issue

Asked by Nikki Nov 18, 2019 at 06:29 PM about the 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2010 Jeep grand Cherokee. For the
last six years, it intermittently will not start. It
was 1-2 x’s a year with this issue but it’s
increased since. Now, you can start it up and
go to the store, and go to leave and it wont
start. It’s a 50/50 chance of it starting now.

Battery is good. Starter has been replaced, it
is good. The starter relays are clicking when
you turn the key. Checked all relays and fuses
with an ohm meter- they’re good.  Lights on
the dash come on, radio comes on when you
turn the key. If you shift to neutral (and all
other gears) and try to start, it will not. Won’t
start with remote start, either. Steering wheel
will not lock- not sure if this is related or not-
but it will start without it locking...

We are going to try putting 12 V straight to the
starter and see If the wire to the starter is the
issue, but I’m not sure we could be so lucky!
Any additional info of things to check would
be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

We think we may have found the answer. The starter solenoid wire was found to be broken inside the insulation. We have replaced that wire, had to splice it, and so far we’ve had no more problems.
