My check engine light came on and the car won't stay on without giving it gas

I tried turning on my car this morning but it would
instantly turn off if no gas is given to it...When I
finally got it to start it would stop while
driving...Can any point me in the right direction as
to what I need to do?

I might buy a 2005 ford focus today,they said engine light is on,because of the Mass airflow needs to be change.can this be true,or something else is happening with the car??
