I have a 2008 Chrysler 300 and it is overheating. I have replaced the radiator cap and released the air with the bleeder valve when adding coolant. coolant gets trapped in my overflow then overheats.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have not replaced the thermostat or anything like that. I don't know what else would
cause the water to back up into the overflow.

Turn your heat on. If it doesn't work, its probably your thermostat

I have turned on the heat it does work very well. I'm think maybe my cooling system is blocked but i would like to be sure.

Does the over flow tank have a cap on it to add anti freeze ?

I haven't seen any leaks would it still be the water pump? It takes a few days after I bleed it air before it overheats again.

Instead of bleeding with screw bleed like this. Remove cap from over flow tank and fill with anti freeze to full mark, leave cap off and start vehicle and let idle, once vehicle starts to reach operating temperature thermostat will start to open, anti freeze level in tank will drop, add more anti freeze to full mark and put cap back on. All air will be removed unless there is another problem.

You should also do a cooling system flush. Prestone Super Flush is really good.

Also after replacing the coolant cap on the reservoir make sure you do bleed it it wouldn't hurt to take the reservoir off and clean it out good while the engine is cool have a blessed day

Did you have a thick white fluid in the reservoir by chance? I have something in my reservoir that looks almost like mashed potatoes... I have a bad feeling what happened to u, happened to me and I'm gona be stuck buying an engine on a car I jus bought less than a week ago... how did u confirm that was the issue?

I started to change the thermostat and noticed a hole in my radiator and when the water drained out there was sealer mixed in the water so I went ahead and checked the heads and one was cracked. I went ahead and took it to a shop because I don't know a whole lot a out cracked heads and they informed me that I couldn't just replace the heads because the bottom pans would mess up it would be cheaper to buy a new engine. All in all the ordeal cost me about 5k for a used engine
