Have you accidentally cancelled the trunk open function? In the glove box, is a button. The trunk lid cannot be opened even with the wireless remote control or the smart key system (including the release on the dash left of steering wheel) It's a valet thing. See page 44 of your owners manual. If you don't have the manual you can download it here: http://www.toyota.com/t3Portal/document/om/OM41433U/pdf/sec_01-02.pdf

Did you or someone accidentally push the 'hidden' DISABLE button left side of glovebox? It's covered by the glovebox door when closed & kind of hard to see (by design) It's there so you can disable the trunk from opening with your valuables in it, lock the glovebox & the valet cannot get in. The previous owner of my car didn't know of it, cut the wires & hotwired the button left of steering wheel. It worked but the fob & exterior button didn not - finding WHY it wasn't working was NOT fun ! Good luck

lol just bought a used 08 Avalon and accidentally pressed the button while changing the cabin filter. I kept thinking 'but this is a Toyota, they dont break like this.' If it had been my Mercedes I would have scheduled some time to research and repair one of the many possibilities.
