are the Motor and trans the same in a 2002 outback sport and a 2000 legacy? both are automatic both are 2.5......can i plug and play?

I have a 2000 legacy outback with an exausted motor (280k) and dead
tranny, beautiful body, all new pads, rotors and struts. i just got a wrecked
impreza outback with 144k...beautiful car aside from the front end dmg that
massacred the front bumper, tweaked the support and both fenders, and
deployed airbags and locked seatbelts. are these motor and trannys the
same? bolt right up status? or would i be better off fixing this impreza? i like
the impreza better, but the legacy is in far better condition.....any opinions
would be appreciated. thanks in advance

From what I found, the engine is the same but the transmission in the Outback Sport is DIFFERENT than the one in the Subaru Legacy Outback. The Outback Sport is really an Imprezza. BUT, to be sure, call Subaru of America at1 (800) 782-2783. They will be able to answer your questions.

The tranny MAY fit! Check more carefully with salvage yard data in addition to SOA, as they frankly don't care. Be sure to swap out the ECM too, as well any weird EGR or header stuff. But it looks like you have all the parts. Have fun.

You can also check opposedforces.com and you can look at specific date ranges and codes. Different codes might work for different gens but it'll have the years and number variances. And if they're both SOHC 2.5, you might get away with using the "new" 2.5 long block and swapping your intake and sensors, etc over to the new engine.
